Leading UK mobile operator, Three has made the decision to scrap charges customers have to pay in order to call 0800 numbers.
The network provider is making all calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 number ranges free whilst reducing the cost of ringing any other 08 or 05 pre-set number to just 5p a minute. In the past, customers of the operator have been charged up to 15p a minute to call these phone numbers.
The change will be available to all of Three’s current contract customers; however they will have to switch to the new tariff in order to take advantage. For all new contract customers the tariff will automatically be available. Watch Three’s latest advert here to find out more about the change.
This landmark decision has been made in the wave of negative publicity surrounding customer service helplines; after it came to light homeowners who had been affected by recent floods were being charged higher rates to make a claim or gain help from the Environmental Agency.
The industry regulator Ofcom has already announced plans to end all charges to 0800 numbers from mobiles, which will come into effect next year.
0800 phone numbers have traditionally been a popular choice amongst organisations due to these ranges being free to call from landlines; however the cost to call from a mobile has often left consumers unsure.
The Executive Director of consumer watchdog Which? has welcomed Three’s tariff change stating; People are confused about the cost of calling 0800 numbers from mobiles, so we welcome Three making these calls free for new contract customers."
