How 0800 & 0808 Numbers Work

0800 and 0808 numbers are grouped together under '080', a 'virtual' type of number that sits on an existing landline or mobile. 080 numbers are free to call from a landline and are soon very likely to be free from a mobile too*. This is because Ofcom (the Office of Fair Communication) is proposing to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe and the USA.

With fixed line BT 01 and 02 numbers you rarely get the chance to choose your own number.
